Hot D@mn - It's Curry Time!

Reports are Doug Gabriel has just been traded to the *Patriots. I like Doug, though he defines the term "inconsistent" in his hands and route running. He is a big play waiting to happen, good or bad.

No word yet on the Raiders' compensation for Gabriel...

What this means, as those of us who can read the cards know, is Ronald Curry is back at full strength. The team has been going easy with Curry in the preseason so as not to repeat (for the fourth time) Curry's blowing a fan belt in his ankle.

Curry should be in the starting line up opposite Randy Moss. Moss will play the vertical-bomb-Clifford Branch role, while Curry will play the slot-possession-Fred Biletnikoff roll.

Look for Johnny Morant and/or Joey Porter to come in for three WR sets. We'd all rather have seen Joey traded instead - I'd give 'em up for a handful of magic beans, actually - but given the Raiders' depth at WR, someone would have been cut.

This way, Al Davis gets compensation and still has the deck stacked at WR. After Moss, Curry, Morant, and Porter... there's still Francis, Whitted, and the rookie, Will Buchanon to choose from. No problemo, just deal from your strong suit to shore up your short stack.

Question is, "What did Al Davis get in return?" Gabriel was originally a fifth-round choice out of Central Florida, but his price will be higher for the *Patsies in trade...

Bottom line: If Curry can come back after three Achilles tendon injuries and play well, he just became my new favorite Raider.

Players like Curry have a heart you can't measure and a work ethic you can't stop.

But they can heat up even the snowiest days in Doncoland. Hot d@mn!

Post script: It's official. Gabriel es no mas. Francis got IRed and luckily, we probably won't have to hear the name "Buchanon" again. I still have a conniption when Phillip Lifetime is mentioned, BTW. Instead, 6'5", 220# John Madsen is the choice. Madsen played at Utah with '69ers QB Alex Smith.

P.P.S. Please don't bother to correct us on the spelling of "Joey" Porter. It isn't a typo. Pouter will get respect when he deserves it 'round this way!

The door is always open to Jerry Porter. If he plays like he talks. This means he quits wearing a t-shirt EVERY day to practice that says "FU" on it (he has worn this same shirt since training camp began, BTW), becomes willing to throw some blocks like Hines Ward (he has the body to do it), makes some tough catches, basically keeps his mouth shut, and actually PERFORMS in the first half of the season for once, he's welcome back and the bashing will cease.

The ball is in Porter's court. If he shows up and quits the TO act, I'd be willing to cheer 'em on just like every other player.

It's Jerry Porter, not Joey Porter.

Joey Porter plays for the Steelers.

Thanks for the editing advice.

You probably aren't a regular 'round here. It's not a typo.

I call Jerry Porter, "Joey" because TV announcers and other mediots still frequently get'em mixed up with the Squeelers' LB.

I am not mixed up nor a mediot.

Other names you will see us use for 'em 'round this way include "Jerry Pouter."

This isn't a typo either. We know how to spell "Porter", we just choose to misspell it on purpose for sticks and giggles.

It's just a little stick to remind Jerry that he still needs to find that place "where everybody knows your name."

Cheers!

Dougie G getting traded caught me off-guard. If you go the Raiders depth chart there are a few puzzling things to note:

1) Curry is not listed on the depth chart

2) the WR slot is blank

3) Radio Gibson is listed as the starting SS

What do these errors, ommissions, and oddities mean? It is either a "clerical" error, the webmaster is napping, or it is some unecessary shenanigans by the Raider organization to keep the mediots guessing.

My best guess on the WR position is that Porter has been a good soldier the last 5 weeks and will line up as the slot receiver come Monday night with Curry/Morant/Whited all filling in 3 WR sets and as situation substitutions in 2 WR sets.

I love Curry's innate abilities to find the soft spots in the zone and move the chains. Morant has earned an opportunity to get more snaps. Whited is a big play receiver who is ideally suited for the vertical offense. Also, for all practical purposes, John Madsen will be used as a receiver with limited TE/blocking duties. This is a well rounded, versatile WR group.

CJ: My bet is pencil Curry in at starting WR.

He definitely is not listed on the depth chart at all right now, but then Raiders always goof up things on their website. Accidentally on purpose.

Disinformation and Spy vs. Spy type stuff, methinks.

Playing Doug Gabriel first string all preseason is an example of this type subterfuge. The Raiders apparently were just raising his trade value by showcasing Gabriel without actually planning to use him as the starter during the real season.

C'mon, c'mon, get over the WR receiver hype. We all know these prima donna has-beens can barely spell 'C-A-T' and their value is purely due to the destructive influence of Paul Tagliabue rule changes. Hey, didn't he just get released by the NFL team?

Let's get to the intellectuals of the game of football: middle linebackers. They quote Camus and sing "Les Miserables" broadway songs as they stick their helmet into the running backs' chests with a force that moves fully-loaded railway cars.

I better see an article on this position tomorrow, StickEm, or I am coming looking for you like a red-dog blitz. Sure, you can read a breaking news wire, but can you analyze the most important position on the Raider line-up come Sept. 11?

Danny Clark was released. Why? Because, as much as we loved his heart, he did not have the talent. I would hate to hear the average yards gained on his 232 tackles the last two seasons. He could not fight off the initial block, and that is unacceptable when you are trying to stop LaDainian Tomlinson. Which is what must be done in eight days if we hope to win the home opener against the Schottenheimer Slugs.

C'mon, La-La, show me what you got. Give me Matt Millen, Ted Hendricks, Bob Nelson, and Rod Martin. Feed me Ray Nitschke, Dick Butkus, and Mike Singletary.

Just don't give me more hype about the prima donna wide receivers.

And this just in on the breaking news wire: Jerry Porter has changed his name to Joey Porter.

Craig: Ask and ye shall receive.

Oops, make that ye shall have no more receivers. On to the trenches...
